Volunteers Tackle Litter on Annual Pick Up the Poconos Day
WHAT: Pick Up the Poconos Day
A one-day volunteer litter cleanup event organized by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, supported by PennDOT, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority, Waste Management and Pennsylvania Environmental Council as well as East Stroudsburg University and numerous municipalities across the Pocono Mountains.
WHERE: Wayne, Pike, Monroe and Carbon counties
WHO: East Stroudsburg Football players, coaches who would normally have a scheduled game on a Saturday in September will be picking litter in East Stroudsburg, Stroudsburg along with other ESU student athletes and community volunteers
Volunteer crews will also be headquartered in the following areas: Honesdale – Jim Thorpe – Milford – Lake Wallenpaupack - Hawley – Newfoundland – Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area – Stroud Township – Middle Smithfield Township – Chestnuthill Township – Coolbaugh Township – Tobyhanna Township – Pocono Township – Delaware Water Gap Borough – Ross Township – Barrett Township – Smithfield Township
MORE: Originally launched in Monroe County in 2017, the event is being expanded to Wayne, Pike and Carbon counties. Volunteers signed up online and chose which location to clean. 250 volunteers have signed up to Pick Up the Poconos in 2020.
PennDOT provides supplies including gloves, vests and bags and the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau provides trash grabbers as well as t-shirts and masks.
