Poconos Fall Foliage Forecast 2023

Home to more than 127 varieties of trees, shrubs, and plants, the Pocono Mountains is a spectacular sight during the fall season. Immerse yourself in fall colors Poconos and discover one of the best places to view fall foliage in Pennsylvania.

Because the region spans 2,400 square miles of northeastern PA, three distinct color zones are present, allowing you to catch peak colors not only once, but three times. Updated every Thursday through the end of October, this forecast will assist you with discovering where, when and how to experience the brilliant foliage in our four-county region. Week of September 21, 2023 through September 27, 2023

Northern: The northernmost color zone encompasses northern Wayne and Pike Counties. Although we are far from peak color, there has been a boost in color this past week with the cooler temperatures. The best areas to see color is around swamps and wet areas. Colors of red can be seen in Red Maples and Dogwood areas. American Beech are also starting to display a dull yellow in some places. Across the northern region, most of the Sugar Maples are continuing to turn a dull yellow/brown and the Black Berry has begun to turn yellow and are quickly dropping leaves. Full color is at 15-20% with 80% of the leaves on the trees. The projected date for peak color is October 7.

Central: The central color zone encompasses southern Wayne, Pike and northern Monroe Counties including Bushkill Falls foliage and more. Red Maple have begun to show significant yellowing. With temperatures, we should start to see some more species added to the foliage season. A good spot to see the recent color changes is Promised Land State Park along the Little Falls Trail. Full color is at 15-25% with 80% of the leaves on the trees. The projected date for peak color is October 20.

Southern: The southern color zone encompasses southern Monroe County and Carbon County, including Jim Thorpe fall foliage. Start to notice slight changes in Red Maple and Black Gum in higher elevations as the foliage season is just starting to begin. Oaks have started to turn a lighter shade of green in higher elevation. Full color is at 10% with 80% of the leaves on the trees. The projected date for peak color is October 29.
