The Pocono Mountains are home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls you'll ever see. Some are hidden deep in the woods. Others are just a short walk on the trail. Each one has its own story, and we're on a mission to discover them all. Explore with us as we go Chasing Waterfalls. 

On the first stop of this new series, PTN host Deanna Fontanez explores George W. Childs Park, a hidden gem where natural beauty and history come together.

Located within Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, George W. Childs Park follows a peaceful trail through a scenic hemlock ravine along Dingmans Creek. The 1.3-mile loop leads visitors to three stunning waterfalls, Factory Falls, Fulmer Falls, and Deer Leap Falls. The trail begins with an accessible path to the first waterfall before continuing through sections of stairs and more rugged terrain, offering an easy-to-moderate adventure surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.

Beyond its breathtaking scenery, George W. Childs Park holds a fascinating connection to the region’s past. At Factory Falls, visitors can still see remnants of the Brooks Woolen Mill, which operated in the 1800s and used the power of the waterfall to help produce textiles. The landscape also reflects the vision of George W. Childs, a Philadelphia publisher and philanthropist who purchased the property in 1892 and worked to make its beauty accessible to the public. In 1912, his widow Emma donated the land to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and later efforts by the Civilian Conservation Corps helped shape many of the trails and structures visitors enjoy today.

In 1983, George W. Childs Park became part of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, ensuring this special place would be preserved for future generations. That commitment to preservation continues today. After severe winter storms damaged portions of the park in 2018, crews rebuilt sections of the trail, bridges, and overlooks before the park reopened in 2022.

As visitors continue along the trail, they discover Fulmer Falls and Deer Leap Falls, each offering a different perspective of this remarkable landscape. Superintendent Eamon Leighty shared with Deanna a fun fact, that Deer Leap Falls is said to have gotten its name, from it being small enough for a deer to leap across.

A visit to George W. Childs Park is more than a chance to experience beautiful waterfalls, it is an opportunity to connect with nature, explore local history, and support the communities that surround these incredible destinations. With millions of visitors exploring Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area each year, nearby businesses, restaurants, lodging, and attractions all benefit from the continued interest in the region.

Open seasonally from April through November, George W. Childs Park offers a different experience with every visit.
