International Eats in the Pocono Mountains

Journey into the cultures behind the cuisine at Shinjiru Ramen and Bluefoot Cuisine in the Poconos.

The Pocono Mountains are home to many incredible dining experiences, and Deanna Fontanez recently embarked on a culinary journey to two hidden gems offering international flavors that are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The first stop on her adventure was Shinjiru Ramen in Tannersville, where traditional Japanese ramen is given a modern twist. Co-owner Eric Wahyudi explains, “My partner loves Japanese food, especially ramen, and we wanted to bring authentic ramen and donburi to the Poconos so that locals and visitors don’t have to travel to New York or Philadelphia to enjoy it.” The menu at Shinjiru features unique offerings like the spicy garlic tonkotsu ramen, a classic dish with a flavorful twist of garlic and spice. Deanna had the chance to try the ramen, which was expertly prepared by co-owner and chef, Peter Kurniawan. Peter's culinary journey began in Indonesia and was further honed in Japanese kitchens, giving his dishes a depth of flavor that’s hard to beat. His passion for food shines through every dish bringing guests an unforgettable dining experience.

After savoring the ramen, it’s time to move on to the next stop: Bluefoot Cuisine in East Stroudsburg, where the vibrant flavors of Ecuador take center stage. Co-owner Monica Castro explains that her and her husband Victor’s love for food, especially the flavors of Ecuador, inspired them to bring authentic Ecuadorian cuisine to the Pocono Mountains. “My husband’s passion for food comes from his upbringing in the Galapagos Islands,” Monica shares. Victor refined his culinary skills as a chef and captain on boat tours in the Galapagos and years later he brought his passion for cooking to the Poconos, opening Bluefoot with Monica. At Bluefoot, guests enjoy more than just great food; the warm, welcoming atmosphere makes everyone feel like part of the family. With a focus on fresh ingredients and bold, authentic flavors, Bluefoot has quickly become a local favorite. To make the experience even more special, Victor occasionally serenades guests with his musical talents.

From the rich flavors of Japan at Shinjiru Ramen to the bold tastes of Ecuador at Bluefoot Cuisine, Deanna’s journey through the Pocono Mountains showcases just a few of the incredible culinary experiences waiting to be discovered. The region is filled with endless opportunities to explore unique and unforgettable dining destinations.
