Jamie @ The Gem & Keystone Tavern

Meet Jamie, the award winning manager of a popular gem in the Poconos.

At The Gem and Keystone Tavern at Shawnee, every plate served comes with a story—and a dedicated team working behind the scenes to make it happen. At the heart of this operation is Jamie Maher, the award-winning general manager whose leadership and passion have shaped the restaurant’s warm, welcoming atmosphere.

For Jamie, hospitality isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

“It’s a labor of love. Whether it’s here or another location, it’s always going to be a labor of love. I don’t know if I could see myself doing something else," said Jamie Maher, General Manager.

Jamie’s roots in the restaurant industry run deep. Raised in Honesdale, she grew up watching her mother work as a caterer, and her younger sister is now a chef. That family-first mindset carries over into her management style at The Gem and Keystone.

“The crew we have here—they’ve got it. They’re talented in so many ways. Not just culinary or customer service. We have artists, musicians, mechanics, students in law and healthcare. It’s amazing to see them grow, whether they stay or go. We support them," she said.

Jamie’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Her team speaks highly of her leadership and work ethic.

“Jamie’s a super hard worker. She keeps the whole ship afloat," said employee Tommy O’Malley.

Recently, Jamie was honored with Manager of the Year at the Spirit of Hospitality Awards by the PRLA Northeast Chapter, and she’ll now represent the region at the state level.

“It was super deserved. She didn’t expect to win, but it was a really cool moment. She always steps up to the plate," added O’Malley.

“It’s an absolute honor to receive that award. Ultimately, it’s my staff. We have a great crew—front and back of house. Working in this resort, with the Kirkwood family, it’s a beautiful place to be," said Maher.

Even on the busiest days, Jamie’s love for the industry shines through.

“It is a calling. It’s rewarding and fulfilling. You take in what you give out—it’s how it goes.”

If Jamie’s story inspires you, Northampton Community College’s Pocono Campus in Tannersville might be your next step. NCC offers flexible, affordable programs tailored to both newcomers and seasoned professionals.

“We have specialized diplomas for those already in the workforce, and associate degrees for students coming straight from high school in hotel, restaurant, and event management," said Rebecca Heid with NCC.

Whether online or through internships with Pocono employers, NCC prepares students for success in a region where starting pay is often higher than elsewhere.

“You can get great careers out of this. Starting pay in the Poconos is around $20/hour. That’s not the case in other areas. We’re lucky to have the resorts and restaurants here," added Heid.
