Morgan Gallery
Explore the Morgan Gallery in Blakeslee, where local creativity comes to life through every piece.
If you’re exploring the Pocono History and Art Trail, you’re bound to stumble upon some incredible places. PTN Host Deanna Fontanez, found a spot where art comes to life, the Morgan Gallery . This gallery is special, not only for its amazing collection but because it’s the oldest commercial art gallery in the Poconos. Deanna chatted with James Morgan, the owner, to get the story behind the gallery. “Well, my dad was an art and drama critic, so I sort of grew up in the arts. When I decided to make a career change, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. Then I was walking through a gallery in New Hope, and the light bulb went on. So, here I am since 1989, working with these wonderful artists in the Pocono region,” he told her. James found the perfect spot in Blakeslee to bring his vision to life, and today, the gallery stands as a beacon for local talent.
So, what makes this place stand out? James explained that the gallery is focused on the quality of the art, not just the name or reputation behind it. “This is a commercial gallery where the art is here based on the merit of the art. There’s no fee to the artist other than a commission when the piece sells. And that’s a difference between this gallery and not all but a lot of others.” With years of experience, James has developed a skill for selecting pieces that really resonate with visitors. “The artists need a place to show their work. It’s so important, and there aren’t many venues for them to do that. A lot of people still want to physically see the piece before they buy it. So, they come to a gallery like this. I try to make sure that there’s something here that will please somebody when they come in. There are over 200 pieces here, and over 30 artists, so it’s worth a visit.”
James also pointed out that while online platforms are great, nothing beats seeing art in person. “There’s something about seeing the original piece. The screen you’re looking at is a different medium, it’s not a canvas. When you come in and see the actual piece of art, it’s a completely different experience,” he said. His long-standing presence in the art community is a testament to the confidence both artists and visitors have in the gallery.
A lot of the artwork at the gallery is inspired by the stunning natural beauty of the Poconos, with plenty of water scenes and landscapes on display. James mentioned, “The nature we have here is unbelievable. There are so many beautiful scenes to enjoy. I like to do it with my work, especially with scenes with water, which we have plenty of.” Many people who visit the gallery are often looking for art that reflects the local area, especially if they have a second home here. “When people come in looking for art, they often ask, ‘Is that a Pocono scene?’ They want it for their home here or maybe their other residences. It’s important to have a local character represented here in the art,” he said.
The Morgan Gallery has also become a home for talented artists like Lisa Hannock, who has been showcasing her work there for over 15 years. Lisa explained how important it is to see the artwork in person. “The fact that people can come in here and see the paintings in person, there’s a lot of distortion when you’re working with any kind of photos or on social media. You won’t get the accurate colors or size of the painting. Coming here is just very advantageous,” she shared. For Lisa, art has been a passion since she was a young child and now, seeing her work displayed in the gallery feels like a full-circle moment. Lisa’s paintings are known for their intricate detail and technique, often drawing viewers in with their careful composition.
From the diverse range of artists to the welcoming atmosphere, Morgan Gallery offers something truly unique. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just exploring the Poconos, it’s definitely a place worth checking out.
