From luscious greens on the ground to the lake, taking on the trees and tending to the animals, Two Creek Farm in Lakewood, Wayne County is a way of life for Brent Habig.

Brent grew up in Maryland and was looking for an escape from city life when he and his dad bought this former dairy farm in 2000 as their vacation getaway.

“But it had not been farmed for the previous thirty years, so it was rundown. There was the original house, couple barns, overgrown fields, that was it,” he explained.

Brent was interested in homesteading. He grew food on a small scale for family and friends. But he eventually developed a love for regenerative organic farming and decided to use his land for that full-time in 2022.

Two Creek Farm is part of the Northern Poconos, an area rooted in agriculture and working hard to keep its farming legacy alive.

“I was working pretty much every day for several years straight. It was a real start up type of an experience to get this up and running. Now we have a team, everything is more professionalized, and it's a little more balanced,” Brent explained.

Two Creek Farm offers public pasture walks, two-hour educational tours held seasonally on the farm. See the laying hens, pasture-raised broiler chickens, turkeys, sheep, highland cattle, and forest-raised hogs. All produce high-quality meat sold at the farm by appointment, at farmers markets, and wholesale.

“Our food system is very damaging environmentally and treats animals poorly. Regenerative agriculture is a different path, and through this we can restore the environment while treating animals very well,” Brent said.

The bees are busy making honey. In the garden, harvests are hand planted and picked, no tractors used. Compost comes directly from the farm's poultry, cultivating a variety of high-quality produce.

Brent said, “the future of our food system is in the hands of eaters and the decisions that they make. If they support local farmers and go to farmers markets, that has an incredible impact on their local community. I would encourage everyone to go meet the farmer closest to where they live or go to the farmers market closest to where they live to explore and understand all the amazing possibilities to shop there instead of just going for the convenience of a 24/7 grocery store.”

Brent turned a treehouse he built for his now grown children into an overnight rental. Relax in the hammock, enjoy the fire pit, have a hot shower overlooking the cow pasture, and explore the land at your leisure. There are also two lakeside campsites with a rope swing, canoeing, and campfire. Guests can have fresh meat from Two Creek Farm delivered to their tent or treehouse.

“They can order burger patties, sausages, grilling vegetables, whatever they feel like. Many guests just end up eating pretty much everything we're growing here,” Brent added.

Brent lives on the farm and so does his team, training to be farmers themselves. The beautiful scenery is a labor of love, hard work especially in the summer months. For example, some pens are pulled forward daily while other pastures are relocated regularly, giving the animals fresh grass for grazing.

“This is not a job, it's very much a lifestyle. It's sustaining every meal I have all year long. It's definitely a full life here, that's very connected to nature,” Brent smiled.
