The unprecedented bout of warm weather this season has led organizers of the annual Wally Ice Fest to put safety first and move to a plan B to salvage a fun weekend for participants still coming to the Lake Wallenpaupack area this weekend.
In lieu of a frozen pond, the festival will feature competitive events on the grounds and courts at Watonka Outdoor Facilities just a short drive from the shores of the big lake.
The two-day event being held February 8-9, 2020 will still include demonstrations from Anthracite Curling Club as well as live music for Saturday and Sunday no matter the weather.
“We did everything in our power to pull off a great ice hockey tournament,” said
tournament director Chris Becker. “However, we’re at the mercy of Mother Nature and unfortunately this year it has not been cold enough to have a safe amount of ice even at our new location.”
Watonka Outdoor Facilities in Hawley, PA is located just a couple of miles from Lake Wallenpaupack. The former campground will play host to the “Labatt Blue Zone” Beer Tent, axe throwing, Kan Jam, cornhole and more fun competitions.
Teams will face off in the Die-Hard Hockey Olympics competing in Deck Hockey Olympics which include skills competitions including events such as “Dude Perfect Challenge,” “Biscuit in the Basket Biathlon,” and other fun.
