From waterfalls to panoramic views to outdoor recreation galore, the Poconos is known for its pristine, protected natural areas. Our region's parks are perfect for hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, camping, swimming and picnicking. Swim or canoe along the shores of the Delaware and Lehigh rivers. Breathe in the fresh air and savor the unspoiled rural scenery. If you arrive in the right season, and go hunting for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and ruffled grouse, or cast a fishing line for shad, trout or bass. Don't forget: whatever you bring in, including trash, take it with you when you go. Leave no trace so that future generations can continue to enjoy the beautiful landscape and wildlife.

State Parks in the Poconos

Managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, all state parks in the Poconos are free to visit. Scroll down to discover the many state parks located in Wayne, Pike, Monroe and Carbon counties and to browse our FAQ.

  • There are two parks managed by the National Parks Service in the Pocono Mountains region: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River.

  • The Monroe County Transportation Authority partners with DWGNRA to operate shuttles in and around the recreation area on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Services include the River Runner, Hiker Shuttle, and Connector Shuttle. Find shuttle schedules and more information on the MCTA website.

  • Camelback Mountain is at the heart of Big Pocono State Park which encompasses 1,306 acres across the summit and slopes, with incredible panoramic vistas and great hiking. The park's facilities are maintained in cooperation with Camelback Mountain Resort, a four-season destination offering skiing, lodging and waterpark fun, located on the northern slopes of the mountain.

  • There are no swimming locations within Big Pocono State Park; however, Camelback Lodge, adjacent to the park, offers indoor and outdoor waterparks.

  • Spread over 80,000 acres, Delaware State Forest offers more than 100 miles of scenic hiking trails as well as 13 lakes and ponds. Try trout fishing in the clear mountain streams or find waterfall views of Stairway and Savantine Falls right off Route 6. Picknicking, horse riding, mountain biking, boating, atv riding and hunting are other popular activities.

  • Promised Land State Park is free to visit! Enjoy fishing and boating in the two lakes and explore the many hiking and biking trails, with opportunities for snowmobiling, ice skating and cross-country skiing in the winter. Note that certain activities like boat rental and camping may involve a fee.
