Known as a top ski destination for decades, the Pocono Mountains boasts more than just action on the slopes. Come experience all the region has to offer this winter

We love our skiing, snowboarding and tubing just as much as we adore all our winter happenings in the Poconos. And whether those activities are outdoors or inside, you’re guaranteed to have a blast! Check out the eight experiences below, and explore the Pocono Mountains beyond the slopes.

Outdoor Fun:

1. Ice Fishing

Try ice fishing this winter! With at least four inches of solid ice, head out on the frozen water and cut a hole to nab some fish. Weather permitting, go angling at one of the Poconos' parks and lakes like Lake Wallenpaupack. Just don’t forget your fishing license! Extended trout season is open until February 28, 2018.

Stay at one of the area’s lodging accommodations, and fish privately without even leaving the place. Resorts like Malibu Dude Ranch and Pocono Manor offer ice fishing at the property’s on-site lakes and ponds.

2. Cross-Country Skiing

We said off the slopes, and we meant it! Experience an admired winter sport variation with cross-country skiing. Conditions permitting, enjoy a guided tour or personally explore the trails of Pocono Mountains’ snow-covered landscape.

The Adventure Center at Skytop Lodge offers cross-country skiing across 5,500 private acres. Want to go off the beaten path? Blaze your own trail at one of the region’s parks like the Lehigh Gorge State Park and Hickory Run State Park.

3. Hiking

Continue trekking through the trails, and go on a winter hike. With 126 hiking trails all over the region, what are you waiting for? Snow or not, bundle up for a walk among the woods and encounter the breathtaking beauty of the Poconos.

Trails are open year-round at Pocono Environmental Education Center. While in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, discover other pathways in 70,000 acres of land. Here you’ll find hikes from easy to extreme, and can even catch a waterfall or two.

4. Eagle Watching

Another popular wintertime activity is eagle watching. Bald eagles migrate to the region during this season for the eco-friendly habitat found in the Pocono Mountains. With clean water and undisturbed land, eagles nest and roost along the upper Delaware and Lackawaxen Rivers.

Bald eagle watching takes flight now through March. You can catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures with the Delaware Highlands Conservancy. Guided eagle watch bus tours and education events are available throughout the winter as well as interpretative exhibits and information.

Indoor Leisure:

5. Entertainment

There's no shortage of good times in the Pocono Mountains with ongoing entertainment. Whether you want a taste of the nightlife or relax to live jazz music, you'll find your niche any night of the week.

Experience some of the best shows from your favorite bands at the Sherman Theater or Penn's Peak. These venues are known for bringing big names to the region and putting on great performances year-round.

6. Escape Rooms

The brain power doesn’t stop at the arts. Put your critical thinking skills to the test in an escape room. In just 60 minutes, follow a series of themed clues to try and solve the mystery.

Grab a group to unravel the puzzle at Klues Escape Room. Choose one of four escape rooms, and experience an interactive challenge unlike any other! Put your teamwork and communications skills to the test at Escape It! Ranging in difficulty, decode one of three themed rooms in your race against time.

7. Wineries and Breweries

Quench your thirst this winter at area wineries and breweries. Whatever your liquid preference, the Poconos has the flavors to satisfy. Open weekly, wineries offer tastings and cellar tours. Interested in experiencing more than one? Join Pocono Wine Tours to visit local vineyards!

And don’t forget about our craft beer! Microbreweries are popping up across the region, each bringing delicious flavors to the area. Both Barley Creek Brewing Company and Wallenpaupack Brewing Company offer growlers, so you can take your favorite beers home!

8. Shopping

Explore what craft shops have to offer or find a bargain at an outlet store. Here in Pennsylvania, there is no sales tax on clothing. So, you can shop until you drop!

American Candle sells not only the obvious, but designer jewelry, handbags and clothes in addition to over 150 varieties of candy. If antiquing is more your style, discover vintage finds at Backroads Antiques ranging from rare collectibles to original furnishings.

With so many activities to experience this season, combine them into several winter day trips! Check out all our snow activities and adventures in the Pocono Mountains. Be sure to keep up with area snow conditions for the latest weather updates.
